Sustainability at times can mean diversity. We are proud to add that definition of sustainable to the Rain Crow Ranch brand. Our farm has finally broken through to new ground as we include not only our signature grassfed beef but now is a source for Rain Crow Ranch American Pasture Poultry!

For years we have sought a local source for top quality pasture poultry and have had some difficulty in finding a bird we were willing to put our brand behind. That situation changed last Thanksgiving when a good friend brought us a turkey from Peace Valley Poultry. Located very near to us in Peace Valley (that is actually the name of the small rural Ozark town) it is the family farm of Jim and Judy Jo Protiva.
That turkey was the very best our family has ever eaten. So we just had to go and visit. We found the unexpected as we toured their
farm. A warm and engaging family, a wealth of innovations and the open friendliness of a meal shared together.
The Protiva family is all we could have hoped for in a partnership. They are a wonderful, value centered family that shares the ideals and philosophy of food production to which we are committed. Importantly, they produce the highest quality bird we have ever tried.
These chicken and turkeys are field-grazed on pesticide-free and herbicide-free pasture. They are fed an antibiotic-free,
non-GMO ration. They grind and mix their own poultry feed using only non-GMO corn and soybeans. (Genetically Modified Organism, also known as GE, Genetically engineered.)
The Protiva family has been raising these free-range birds since 1996 and we have adopted them as our poultry mentors sharing with us how to do it right. During 15+ years of raising poultry on pasture, the Protiva family has refined their feed and poultry shelters in a way that sets them apart from any other producer we have visited.
The use of non-GMO grain was very important to us. It costs more but in our opinion is well worth the difference.
The open hoop houses provide the chickens with rest in the shade and a place to eat and drink.
We are not aware of any other pastured poultry growers in Missouri that have been at it this long and there is a reason. It is hard physical work and their innovations enable them to move the poultry 1 and 2 times a day.
This provides more insects for the birds to eat and a cleaner environment in which to sleep. It is healthier for the birds and moving to clean pasture allows them to be raised without the use of antibiotics.
The chickens and turkeys are truly free range and can roam over 34 acres. The chickens spend at least half of their life on pasture. Typical for the summer months is 2 1/2 weeks in the brooder and 5 1/2 weeks on pasture.
The shelter is usually moved twice a day during week 7 and 8. This free-range freedom does have its cost, however.
Jim puts 500 birds in the brooder for us this spring and his comment to me when they finished was, “Well, the good news is that we have a bumper crop of grasshoppers and these birds are going to be great. The bad news is we have a bumper crop of owls and hawks and they have caused some loss to the birds.”
These birds are unbelievable. If you have tried pastured birds in the past and found them somewhat dry and stringy you have got to try these birds. If you have been on conventional confined chickens you absolutely must try the flavor of these birds! The Protiva family and the birds they raise are the real deal. At Rain Crow we are proud to know the family and are very proud to offer these birds to our extended family, you our customers.
In this first year of pastured poultry to our customers we are only offering whole birds. Yet, we will share a wealth of information with you about how to use a whole chicken. It is not as complicated as it might seem.
